THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD LIGHTING

Lighting plays such a vital role in your home to provide overall ambient lighting, decorative and task specific lighting. A well designed lighting plan will create an overall feel and look to your home, aswell as proper functionality.

Things to consider when creating a lighting design are function and use, safety, aesthetic, and lumens. Lumens are a measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye) from a lamp or light source. The higher the lumen rating the “brighter” the lamp will appear.

With low energy LED lamps, more light output can be achieved with much less power consumption. For example, a 6.5W LED lamp will give a similar light output to a 50W Halogen bulb. That's 87% less energy for the same light output! When using LED more energy is converted to light rather than heat. As technology improves, more lumens will be produced using even less Watts - i.e. more lumens per Watt. So as a result, using Watts as a guide to brightness is no longer relevant. There are three basic types of lighting, as defined by Maxim Lighting

AMBIENT LIGHTING

General Lighting provides an area with overall illumination. Also known as ambient lighting, general lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness, enabling one to see and walk about safely. It can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights, and with lanterns outside your home. A basic form of lighting that replaces sunlight, general lighting is fundamental to a lighting plan.

TASK LIGHTING

Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks such as reading, sewing, cooking, homework, hobbies, games, or balancing your checkbook. It can be provided by under cabinet, tape and track lighting, pendant lighting, and portable lamps. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain.

ACCENT LIGHTING

Accent Lighting (or decorative lighting) adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of a decorating scheme, it can be used to spotlight paintings, houseplants, sculpture, and other prized possessions, or to highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outdoor landscaping. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it. This usually is provided by track, under cabinet, tape, or wall-mounted fixtures.
